In the last week or two, we have seen a resurgence of another discrimination issue which is much more long-standing, that of anti-semitism the UK Labour Party is currently considering a report by the Equality and Human Rights Commission on anti-semitism in its recent past. The conversation we all now need to engage in will be a difficult one. The movement has taken hold in the UK and throughout Europe too, although it does not appear to be quite as toxic as in the USA. Some of these, no doubt, subscribe to the view that the oppressed somehow deserve their lesser status. The #BlackLivesMatter movement is rocking the United States to its very foundations and leading to some intense friction between people who have been historically oppressed and who are saying enough is enough, and people who fear what they might lose. Their talents have been undervalued, their lives and their health have been damaged, their daily lived experience has, for many, been characterised by fear and by acts of hostility. Many people who have experienced discrimination are angry. We are living in an age where minorities are beginning to find their voices.

(128.11-12) "I'm supposed to save the whole world, remember?" I whispered back. "You know we can't save them all," he told me softly. Even though she knows that it's technically a bad idea (and could lead to her death), Max goes ahead with it anyway: This is exactly what she does when she swoops down to protect Ella, and when she decides to release all of the other hybrids at the Institute. Max isn't just prepared to take the heat worst-case scenarios concerning her nearest and dearest, though-she's also willing to throw herself into the line of fire for people that she doesn't even know. Like a captain, Max is willing to go down with the ship. Leader that she is, there's a part of her plan that she doesn't share with anyone else: She's willing to sacrifice herself if it means the rest of them can escape. So when Angel gets caught, Max comes up with a plan to break her out of the School. Max is willing to risk anything for her friends, and leads them whenever they're in peril-which is more often than they'd like. Even though she's only fourteen-years-old, Maximum Ride (known as Max) is the leader of her flock, and she takes this responsibility quite seriously. Check out the infographic below for a longer explanation:Īs the data visualization above suggests, this is simply how capitalism works. What makes this French economist’s conclusions worth global notice? The short answer is that Piketty and his research team amassed a mountain of data, much of it going back centuries, suggesting that the concentration of wealth in ever-fewer hands is not an anomaly or a recent development. (Watch Piketty’s TED Talk: New thoughts on capital in the twenty-first century.) That’s no small feat for a chart-heavy doorstop on “the dismal science” of economics.Ī fair portion of the book’s notoriety was due to its subject matter: wealth distribution, an intensely political topic if ever there was one.
